By rail or bus from Glasgow to Oban
All trains from other UK cities arrive at either Glasgow Central Station or Queen Street Station. From Glasgow Central, either walk (ca 10 minutes) or take the free shuttle bus to Queen Street Station or Buchanan Bus Station.
Buses and trains usually depart Glasgow shortly after 0800, 1200 and 1800 hours on summer weekdays. The frequency can drop for winter and weekends. The approximately 3 hour journey by bus or rail is very scenic. It is highly recommended that you check the departure schedule carefully to avoid getting stuck in Glasgow:

Advance internet booking can result in substantial savings and reserves you a guaranteed seat. While the line from Glasgow to Oban is not busy for most of the year, individual trips during the summer tourist season can be oversold. The regular single fare from Glasgow to Oban costs around £17 (rail) or £13 (coach). Pre-booked APEX and e-ticket fares can be up to around 50% cheaper.
If you travel directly to SAMS, get off the bus at Dunbeg (ask the driver to stop as he may not do so otherwise) and take the 10 minute walk to the Institute following the signs to the neighbouring Dunstaffnage Castle.
If you travel by train, get off either at Connel Ferry or Oban, and continue to SAMS by local bus or taxi. Connel is slightly closer to SAMS but as the station is much smaller it is less well served by bus and taxis.
Otherwise get off the bus or train at the station nearest to your destination - ask your hotel, B&B or SAMS contact for directions.
