Facilities
Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa
CCAP is the most diverse culture collection in the world, with ca 3000 strains of marine and freshwater algae and protists. Cultures can be purchased for commercial use and academic research.
European Centre for Marine Biotechnology
The European Centre for Marine Biotechnology is a business incubator for new and emerging marine biotechnology companies in the UK. The centre is currently home to three successful biotech businesses.
Aquarium
This newly refurbished aquarium facility is available for hire externally, with or without support services. Experienced SAMS scientists are available to support contract research or participate in collaborative projects involving this facility.
Research vessels
SAMS operates two research vessels, RV Calanus and RV Seol Mara, both of which are available for charter, in addition to a number of smaller dive boats. Calanus is equipped with multi-beam sonar and side-scan capabilities.
National Facility for Scientific Diving
The NFSD is a world-class facility that supports scientific diving and is based at Dunstaffnage, where it is part of the SAMS Diving Centre. We also have a hyperbaric chamber that is used for emergency treatments by the wider community.
Conference and field centre facilities
SAMS has excellent meeting rooms and lecture theatres that can be rented by outside organisations. Several of our rooms include the latest video conferencing facilities. SAMS also rents out facilities to host field excursions.
Dunstaffnage Marine Science Park
Highlands and Islands Enterprise is developing a marine science park on the doorstep of SAMS to encourage companies to set up their business in Oban with access to SAMS and ECMB facilities and expertise. It is the natural next phase for companies who outgrow the European Centre for Marine Biotechnology.
