Postgraduate study at SAMS
Our postgraduates carry out marine research across the globe. We offer a taught postgraduate degree as well as supervision for research degrees in marine biology, oceanography and more.
Research degrees
We currently have 15 full-time postgraduate research students covering the entire spread of marine science disciplines with projects in marine biology, mariculture, palaeoceanography, marine physics, marine geochemistry, marine biogeochemistry, marine renewables and marine microbial ecosystem modelling. Most follow a PhD programme, with a few on MPhil and MSc (by research) programmes.
Our students are registered with UHI Millennium Institute, and research degrees are accredited by and awarded through the University of Aberdeen.
SAMS scientists also act as supervisors for research degree students registered at other universities. These students usually spend only a part of their registration period at SAMS.
Funding for our current studentships has been provided by UHI, the Natural Environment Research Council, through research projects, and by industrial partners.
Interested in becoming a PhD student?

When funding for research projects becomes available (usually in the spring), these are advertised widely on our website and in the international science press.
Students with private funding can contact the scientist they would like to act as their supervisor or our postgraduate student officer, Dr Lois Nickell, at any time.
Interested in becoming an MSc student?
SAMS researchers regularly act as supervisors for MSc projects. If you would like to come to SAMS or work with a SAMS scientist for your MSc project, please speak first with the MSc course leader at your home institution, and then contact the SAMS scientist you'd like to act as your supervisor.
Taught postgraduate degrees
We now offer an outstanding MRes course in Marine Systems Science. The course is taught by experts in marine biology, physical science and marine systems analysis and management, providing an integrated framework within which to explore the relationships between human activity, biodiversity and the ocean environment. It is taught jointly with the University of St Andrews.
Closing date for 2010 applications is 30 June
