Baffin Island Expedition
Expedition to Baffin Island, August-September 2009: Seaweed and oomycete benthic diversity in the Canadian Marine Arctic
An international group of scientists is heading to the Canadian Arctic to study the diversity of the region's seaweed ecosystem. The aim of the research expedition is to study hitherto little-known seaweeds growing in the remote and inhospitable fringes of the Arctic Ocean.

Introduction
Global climate change is expected to alter the Arctic and Antarctic bioregions faster than any other marine environment on Earth. For this reason, Dr Frithjof Küpper from SAMS is leading an international expedition to Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, to examine the diversity and diseases of the region’s little-known macroalgae (seaweeds). The expedition will constitute the first-ever opportunity to document this Arctic seaweed ecosystem both for research and public outreach purposes, using underwater photography, sample collection, and possibly filming techniques.
