SAMS is ruled by an independent Council, chaired by the President, which is supported by a Board of Council (made up of a sub-group of Council members) and a number of committees (made of of Board members, some external contributors and SAMS employees). SAMS Council members are the non-executive directors of the Company.

Council members and the President are elected at the Annual General Meeting by the membership (SAMS employees have no voting rights). Council appoints the Director, who is accountable to Council. The SAMS board has an advisory function for Council.

A programme advisory board of international subject experts annually reviews the quality of research conducted at SAMS.
