SAMS Honorary Research Fellow

Dr John Gordon is a fish biologist. He joined SAMS in 1969 and initially investigated the fish populations of the sea lochs of the Oban area. In 1974 he participated in the maiden fishing cruise of the oceanographic research vessel Challenger and in 1975 began a study of the deep-water fish populations of the Rockall Trough that was to last until 1999 when Challenger was decommisioned. His main research interests are in the biology and ecology of the deep-water demersal fish and he has published widely on age, growth, reproduction and feeding. When the commercial deep-water fishery began in 1989 his knowledge became invaluable and this was recognised by his appointment as UK Buckland Professor in 1994. He chaired the ICES Deep-water Study Group from 1995-2000 and has coordinated several European Union projects. He has been a co-convener of four international deep-water fisheries meetings. Since retiring at the end of 2002 and becoming an Honorary Fellow he has continued to be active in writing up previous research for publication, editing and giving lectures at deep-water symposia. He has also undertaken several consultancies under the auspices of SAMS. In 2007 he became a member of GESAMP and will chair a new deep-water fisheries working group
