SAMS Physical Oceanographers monitoring Arctic Ocean

Cruise map for NABOS Arctic cruise

SAMS Oceanographer Dr Vladimir Ivanov has today deployed an oceanographic mooring in the Arctic Ocean as part of the NABOS array (http://nabos.iarc.uaf.edu/cruise/2009/). The temperature and speed of Atlantic water entering the Arctic are important factors in controlling the extent and thickness of seaice in the Arctic. This mooring is in a critical location, allowing us to monitor future changes in the quantity of heat entering the Arctic Ocean from the North Atlantic.
