“Our understanding of ocean mixing processes has generally lagged our grasp of large-scale ocean circulation. Perhaps the greatest impact of this knowledge gap has been the inability of large-scale ocean models to parameterize these small-scale processes adequately.”

Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together a group of obervationalists and modellers who are interetsed in the interaction between stratified flow and topography; with particular attention to the small scale, possibly non-hydrostatic aspects of the flow, and the dissipation of mean flow energy and subsequent irreversible mixing. Intended outcomes of the workshop are greater mutual awareness and wider future collaboration.

Preliminary Timetable:

Monday 12th            evening: Gathering at the Caledonian Hotel as people arrive

Tuesday 13th:          am – Talks and discussion on observations

Lunch – Extended lunch with poster session

pm – Talks and discussion on models
                             evening – workshop dinner

Wednesday 14th:     am – Conclusion of talks and discussions

New challenges for observationalists and modellers: How should we work with each other's data?

pm – Boat trip to Loch Etive (weather permitting)

More details will be worked out as the list of talk titles becomes available.

We would like to allow 30 minutes for each talk and following discussions.

We plan to send out a book of abstracts before the meeting. We assume most people will wish to give a talk (and/or poster). Please indicate your intention to talk or bring a poster as soon as possible, and then email your abstract by October 22nd (all correspopndence to mark.inall@sams.ac.uk)

There are many hotels in Oban, contact the Tourist Information Centre (01631 563122) if you wish to make alternative arrangements

Getting to Oban from south of Central Scotland is actually quite easy, relatively low cost and along some stunningly beautiful routes. Your journey is basically in two stages:

1. Getting to Glasgow or Edinburgh Flights Trains

2. Onward journey to Oban Trains Buses Driving

Both Glasgow and Edinburgh are relatively easy to get to from anywhere in the UK with good rail and flight connections. Your onward journey to Oban by public transport will require you to travel through central Glasgow so in general it is quicker and cheaper to arrive in Glasgow rather than Edinburgh. Detailed information can be found here (http://www.sams.ac.uk/about-us/google_map)
