Most of the eastern component of the outflow of cold water from the Nordic Seas across the Greenland - Scotland Ridge is monitored by the Faroese Fisheries laboratory with an ADCP deployed in the Faroe Bank Channel. However, on its own this current meter omits about 10 - 15% of the eastern component of the cold outflow that crosses the Faroe - Scotland part of the ridge.  Following EU Framework V MOEN activities, we continue to deploy a moored ADCP to monitor the smaller part of the outflow that crosses the Wyville Thomson Ridge.  The initial results of this exercise can be found in Sherwin et al. (2008).

Modelling the Wyville Thomson Ridge Overflow - an Oceans2025 SOFI Grant

In support of the WTR ADCP mooring SAMS is a co-PI in an Oceans2025 SOFI grant aimed at understanding in detail the nature of the flow across the ridge, and the causes of its variability, which are linked to the the transport upstream in the Faroe-Shetland Channel and the Faroe Bank Channel.  This grant is held jointly with Prof. P.A. Davies (University of Dundee) and Dr V.I. Vlasenko (University of Plymouth) and will help determine the ideal site for the ADCP mooring on the ridge.

THOR

SAMS is a partner in THOR, an EU Integrated Project aimed at establishing a routine monitoring network of the exchange across the Greeneland-scotland Ridge.  Data from the WTR ADCP mooring forms part of SAMS contribution to this project.
