Svalbard Iceberg Tracking Using PALSAR (SIT-UP)

PI: Prof. Peter Wadhams (DAMTP)
Project Scientist: Nick Hughes

Using target recognition techniques developed for the detection of specific objects in a textured background (e.g. mines on the seabed) we have developed a method for detecting and identifying icebergs embedded in sea ice. We plan to:

(a) improve this algorithm for use with PALSAR data,

(b) apply it to the iceberg-producing glaciers of Svalbard in order to assess the contribution of calving icebergs to mass balance and climate change-induced effects.

Funds for this work come from our participation as a partner in the DAMOCLES project of EU FP6.
