Research interests

Dr Kenneth Black has been involved in marine science for 17 years and has published 48 peer-reviewed papers on a variety of topics ranging from organic chemistry to modelling environmental impacts of aquaculture. He has edited and co-edited 6 books on environmental impacts of aquaculture and contributed chapters to seveeral other volumes. Within SAMS he leads the Ecology Department, which currently comprises 31 scientists and 6 graduate students. He has supervised 9 PhD students to successful completion. He has previously co-ordinated 3 EU projects concerning the impacts of aquaculture, including BIOFAQS, and was a participant in the EU MERAMED and SAMI projects. Recently he was the co-ordinator of the EU FP6 STREP ECASA - Ecosystem Approach for Sustainable Aquaculture that is currently at the final reporting stage (www.ecasa.org.uk). In the UK, he has lead several major projects including the DEFRA 'Ecological effects of sea lice medecines' project (£1.5m) and several SARF projects. he was a co-PI on NERC projects from AUTOSUB and DEMA thematic programmes. Dr Black is a member of the Scottish Working Group on Aquaculture and more recently a member of the Expert Working Group on Aquaculture Site location. He is an accredited PRINCE2 Practitioner.

His current research interests include:

  • Persistent organic pollutants in the Arctic
  • Recovery processes in fish farm sediments

  • Distinguishing salmon populations using scale micro-chemistry
  • Lipids as climate and trophic indicators
  • Indicators and models of pollution form aquaculture
