Scientific interests
I'm a microbial ecologist, focussed on marine biogeochemistry.
My main interest at present are:
- Anaerobic microsites and methanogenesis
- Role of dimethylsulphoxide in the sulphur cycle
- Algal production of dimethylsulphoxide and its physiological function
- Algal-bacterial interactions
Other current interests include:
- Photochemistry
- Feeding behaviour and chemical cues
- Trimethylamine-N-oxide measurements

- Supervised Julian Pillans on a NERC studentship in collaboration with G. Uher & R. Upstil-Goddard (Newcastle University). Project title: Photochemical and photobiological controls of the marine sulphur cycle. Will submit his Thesis June 2006.
- Director of Studies for Sam Wilson on an UHI millennium Institute studentship in collaboration with M. Hart, A.N. Miller (SAMS) and C. Law (NIWA). Project title: Production of biogenic gases in the upper ocean. October 2003 - October 2006.
