 Job Title: Senior Lecturer in Marine Biogeochemistry

 Scientific interests

 I'm a microbial ecologist, focussed on marine biogeochemistry.

My main interest at present are:

  • Anaerobic microsites and methanogenesis
  • Role of dimethylsulphoxide in the sulphur cycle
  • Algal production of dimethylsulphoxide and its physiological function
  • Algal-bacterial interactions

Other current interests include:

  • Photochemistry
  • Feeding behaviour and chemical cues
  • Trimethylamine-N-oxide measurements

Teaching / supervising activities

Module Leader for Biogeochemical Cycling and lecturer on the Ocean Circulation and Climate Change module of the Marine Science Degree.

  •  Supervised Louise Darroch on a NERC funded studentship in collaboration with P.S. Liss & G. Malin (UEA). Project title:  Dimethylsulphoxide origin, fate and cycling. Completed October 2003.     
  •  Supervised Julian Pillans on a NERC studentship in collaboration with G. Uher & R. Upstil-Goddard (Newcastle University). Project title: Photochemical and photobiological controls of the marine sulphur cycle. Will submit his Thesis June 2006.
  •  Director of Studies for Sam Wilson on an UHI millennium Institute studentship in collaboration with M. Hart, A.N. Miller (SAMS) and C. Law (NIWA). Project title: Production of biogenic gases in the upper ocean.  October 2003 - October 2006.
  • Supervised 3 summer student placements (Katie Chamberlain, Charlotte Gough and Marie Moore).
  • Supervised final year dissertation project (Marie Moore – Testing the CLAW hypothesis).
