Research Interest: Marine Environmental Chemistry

I trained as an analytical chemist, working in marine and estuarine environments. My postdoctoral work investigated the dynamics of organic matter in marine systems. Most recently I have been working with Dr. Keith Davidson (Microbial and Molecular Biology Department) on projects related to the influences of organic nutrients on microbial community dynamics in partially enclosed environments. I have also been involved in projects looking at both the environmental influences on salmonid survival and the wider socio-economic factors affecting the Scottish salmon industry.

PhD Supervision

  • Georgina Spyres: The biogeochemical cycling of dissolved organic carbon in the Iberian Margin upwelling system, NE Atlantic Ocean (1997-2002).
  • Oseas Costa Jr: Nutrification and its effects on coral reefs from Southern Bahia, Brazil (1998-2001).
  • Vera Jones: Characterisation of dissolved organic nitrogen in aquatic environments (1999-2002).
  • Pei Sun Loh: The role terrigenous organic carbon in Scottish sea loch sediment diagenesis (2000-2005).
  • Alex MacDonald: Influences on salmonid survival in a Scottish West Highland river (MPhil, 2001-2007).
  • Emma Suddick: Impacts of CDOM photochemistry on freshwater nitrogen biogeochemistry (2002-2007).
  • Romain Pete: The influence of organic nutrient perturbation on marine microbial community dynamics (2004-2008).
  • Sarah Bayley: Towards a brighter future for Scottish salmon – new ideas in socio-economic and political dimensions (2005-).
  • Christian Lønborg: The importance of dissolved organic matter in two contrasting marine waters (2006-).

Teaching / supervising activities

I was a member of the core teaching Team who created the BSc(Hons) Marine Science at SAMS. In so doing, I was Module Leader for a number of courses: H1 Principles of Chemistry, H2 Chemical Oceanography, H2 Marine and Estuarine Systems, H3 Marine Pollution and H4 Defining the Marine Carbon Cycle. I have also contributed to the delivery of other modules: H1 Introducing Marine Science, H1 Marine Science Field course, H2 Marine resources, H3 Marine biogeochemical cycling and H4 case Study.
