'Artica islandica' at Royal Society's 350th Anniversary Exhibition

Arctica islandicaThe National Facility for Scientific Diving (NFSD) based at SAMS is one of the partners on an exhibit to be presented at the Royal Society's 350th Anniversary Summer Science Exhibition (RSSSE) at the Southbank Centre in London in 2010.

The only exhibit focussing explicitly on climate change, and the only marine science exhibit, its title is "Arctica islandica, the longest-lived animal on earth" and will feature video and photographs of live animals in situ, as well as the diving used.

Arctica islandica - longest-lived animal on earth

the NFSD is part of a consortium led by Bangor and including the Universities of St Andrews, Mainz and Iowa State, the Max Planck Institute (Rostock), The Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research and Research into Ageing (Help the Aged/Age Concern). It also centrally involves three NERC facilities/institutes (Radiocarbon Laboratory, Scientific Diving, British Geological Survey).

The RSSSE 2010 will be a very special event. It coincides with the 350th Anniversary of the Royal Society and with the BBC Year of Science. There will be many additional Royal Society-sponsored events in the Southbank Centre at the same time as the RSSSE including concerts, dance, art; these will all focus on scientific themes. It is the biggest
event ever staged by the Royal Society and will also coincide with a Convocation of the Royal Society; this happens only once every 50 years and all Fellows of the Royal Society are expected to attend, in addition to members of the Royal Family.
