SAMS responds to the Scottish Marine Bill consultation

Media release: 6 October 2008

SAMS welcomed the opportunity to respond to the consultation process by the Scottish Government on the proposed Marine Bill for Scotland. Our response, which was submitted on 6th October, is comprehensive in its approach and includes contributions from staff with a wide range of capabilities, reflecting the many facets of marine science, marine resource use and the implementation of Integrated Coastal Zone Management and marine policy. The consultation response was co-ordinated by the SAMS Centre for Coastal and Oceans Governance (CCOG).

The Marine Bill will fundamentally change the way Scotland’s coastal zone and marine systems are governed. With the underlying ethos of the Marine Bill to deliver sustainability in how our seas and coasts are exploited and protected through the process of regional marine planning, SAMS response emphasises the need for transparency, equitable decision-making and inclusiveness of all marine resource users. Adequate funding and provision of an appropriate skills-base for marine planning and investment in the science base will be critical for the success of this major legislative reform.
