SAMS appoints new Head of Enterprise

Translating the applied science produced at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) into real-world applications with be a priority for the research institute’s newly appointed Head of Enterprise.

Steve Ham will lead SAMS Enterprise as it develops its marine consultancy and products to help the emerging blue economy in the UK and abroad.

With experience in business development and the subsea, aquaculture, energy and marketing sectors, Steve believes he can help to develop the institute’s diverse portfolio of expertise.

He said: “With the diversity of talent and expertise at SAMS we have a unique offering to support organisations working in the blue economy space and I am excited about the potential we have here.

“SAMS research has been pivotal to a number of developments in industry, not least sustainable aquaculture, marine renewables, robotics and seaweed farming.

“At SAMS, we’re committed to bridging the gap between research and industry. I want to help to accelerate this effort by creating opportunities for collaboration, research commercialisation and delivering solutions for clients.”

SAMS Enterprise provides specialist marine consultancy, underpinned by the world-class science of SAMS. It also operates the Seaweed Academy and Scientific Robotics Academy training courses, as well as the Seaweed Nursery, which provides seeded line and biobanking services for the seaweed cultivation industry.

Previously Steve has led commercial services sales at JFD Global, been Commercial Director at The Underwater Centre and consulted for a number of marine-related businesses.

“With his experience in the many industries that benefit from our science and his skills in business development, marketing and sales, Steve was the ideal candidate to take our commercial offering to the next stage of its development.
