'Pump up the volume' on marine renewables?

The coastal waters around the UK have the potential to provide a wealth of renewable energy resources. Great for us as we aim to provide more sustainable energy sources and reduce carbon emissions, but it may not be such great news for some of our marine wildlife.

Research on the impacts of the devices used to extract energy from our seas is still in its infancy, but while many are focussed on the need to reduce noise impact, sea mammal expert Ben Wilson from SAMS thinks that they may not be noisy enough for marine mammals and fish to detect them.

Ben recently spoke to PlanetEarth Online about his concerns, you can listen and find out more at http://planetearth.nerc.ac.uk/multimedia/story.aspx?id=336.
