New film on North Atlantic circulation

A large EU funded project investigating ocean circulation in the North Atlantic has just released a 20 minute documentary outlining the key findings from the project.

SAMS is one of 20 partners in the European THOR project that has been investigating the stability of the ocean currents that are responsible for the much warmer climate on the European side of the North Atlantic than on the Eastern border of Canada. In conclusion the team found that the currents (Gulf Stream/North Atlantic Drift) are quite stable and that a new 'ice age' caused by the slowing down or ceasing of the currents in a 'The Day after Tomorrow' scenario are unlikely to occur in the near future.

The SAMS involvement is via the research of Dr Stuart Cunningham.
