NERC research experience placements

We are pleased to announce that the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) will be running the Research Experience Placement (REP) scheme for a fifth year.

The NERC recognises that there is a shortage of individuals with quantitative skills coming into environmental science. The REPs are aimed at addressing this shortage by offering funding for summer placements, which focus on encouraging undergraduate students who are studying quantitative disciplines to consider a career in environmental research. As such, the scheme is subject to certain eligibility criteria listed below.

SAMS will be offering two studentships/placements for summer 2014.  Successful candidates will be expected to be in post from June 2014. The placements are for 10 weeks with successful candidates receiving funding of £200.00 per week.

Research projects

Candidates can choose from the following projects:

  1. Detailed beach surveys using Remotely Piloted Aircraft and Precise GPS
  2. Beyond Deep: Hadal Temperatures and Salinities in the Pacific Trenches at depths from 6 to 11 kilometers
  3. Estimating the contribution of man-made structures to coastal jellyfish blooms

Eligibility

Selected students must meet all of the following criteria. The students must...

  • have at least a grade C in Mathematics at A level (or equivalent in Scotland)
  • be studying for a degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g. mathematics, statistics, computing, engineering, physics)
  • be undertaking the placement in a different department to their undergraduate degree
  • be in the middle of their first degree studies (or integrated Masters)
