Helen is an environmental solicitor with extensive experience advising on environmental and marine law across a diverse range of sectors. Her practice includes providing legal advice to developers, consultants, statutory bodies, NGOs, and academics on complex legal frameworks related to the environment.
Alongside Helen’s legal practice, she has recognised expertise in marine mammal law, underpinned by her earlier career as a marine mammal scientist and consultant in the UK, United States, and Canada. Helen holds a first-class BSc from the University of Liverpool, an MRes in Marine Mammal Science from the University of St Andrews (being part of the very first group of graduates on this course), and an LLM in Environmental Law from Newcastle University. Her combined legal and scientific background informs both her advisory practice and her academic contributions.
Helen regularly speaks on the interaction between science and law at universities and conferences, including at the University of St Andrews, the United Nations Ocean Conference, the Society for Marine Mammalogy, the European Cetacean Society, and the UK Environmental Law Association (UKELA). Within UKELA, Helen is also a Vice-Chair and the founder and convenor of the Marine Group.
Helen is the author of the recently published book, ‘A Practical Guide to Marine Mammal Law in the UK,’ the first dedicated legal reference consolidating the fragmented and complex frameworks for cetaceans and pinnipeds in UK waters.
In recognition of Helen's work, she has been listed as one of the top 100 environmental professionals making the greatest impact in the UK in 2022, 2024, and 2025.
Outside of environmental law and marine mammals, Helen’s other passion is music. She recently recorded an album of ten original songs, which has been played on BBC Introducing and other radio stations.
