PDRA in Marine Social Science (D10/24.SB)


Location:  On-site at SAMS, Oban

Contract Type: Fixed Term, for 18 months

Working Pattern:  Full Time (37hrs per week, Monday to Friday)

Salary Range:  £31,396 – £41,732 per annum

The Role

- As a marine social science researcher, you will work on collaborative and participatory projects, with a diversity of communities and stakeholders.

- You will understand qualitative approaches to social research and be able to apply them in the field, and you will have some knowledge of theoretical frameworks and epistemologies that guide these approaches.

- Working with relevant SAMS Principal Investigators and our filmmaker, you will undertake arts-based social science methods, connecting with communities to understand motivations and perspectives towards low trophic aquaculture through the National Lottery Community Funded project, Unlocking the Power of Seaweed: scaling up seaweed farming in the UK, led by WWF-UK.

- You will also work with international partners on the Horizon Europe Blue Bioclusters project, organising workshops, analysing qualitative and quantitative data on Europe’s blue biotechnology sectors, and contributing to project deliverables and peer-reviewed papers.

- There may be the possibility to support BSc and MSc modules, depending on your experience.

- Travel and fieldwork within the UK are required, with potential opportunities for international travel as well.

 

The position is advertised across 2 grades. Where a candidate is appointed at the higher grade, the duties and responsibilities will be adjusted on appointment to reflect this.

 

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will have:

- PhD in social or marine science discipline.

- Experience in organising, conducting, and thematically analysing qualitative interviews.

- Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to empathise with a diversity of stakeholders and views.

- Excellent communication skills in writing, presentations, and both informal and formal conversations.

- Ability to work independently and with a team.
