SAMS news room

Christopher William Bell

It is with deep sadness that we have to inform you of the accidental death of the SAMS PhD student, Christopher Bell, as a result of the widely reported avalanche in Glencoe on Saturday 19 January 2013. Our thoughts are with his family and all those that were close to him.

Chris was with us at SAMS for a little over two years as a PhD student. He was an absolute pleasure to work with and get to know over that time.  His infectious enthusiasm, good humour and positivity made an impression on all around him and he formed friendships in all aspects of life, in SAMS and in the wider community.

Chris was a lover of the outdoors - whether biking, running over the Scottish hills or chasing drifters around the Corryvreckan for his studies - he was a liver of life.

In many senses, SAMS acts as an extended family and in particular our postgraduate community is very close.  Chris is acutely mourned and missed and will be remembered in SAMS into the distant future. In the coming days and weeks we will develop ways of celebrating his time in our midst.

May he rest in peace.

UPDATE: Chris was laid to rest in his home town of Blackburn on Thursday, 31 January. His fellow students, friends and colleagues at SAMS will keep the memory of Chris' time at SAMS alive...
