Trustee and Chair of Research, Enterprise and Innovation Committee

Colin Brownlee is a cell biologist at the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth. His research employs a multidisciplinary approach, from laboratory to research vessel, to understand the molecular mechanisms by which phytoplankton drive major biogeochemical processes. This work also addresses the evolution of signalling mechanisms in eukaryotic organisms more generally. He leads a research team funded through UK Research Councils as well as Foundation and European grants, including an ERC Advanced Grant.

Colin was Director of the MBA from 2007‐2017 during which the MBA was awarded a Royal Charter and the process of merging with the Sir Alistair Hardy Foundation (SAHFOS) was formalised. He holds the position of Chair of Marine Biosciences at the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences, University of Southampton from which he is seconded to the MBA as a Senior Research Fellow.
