Marine biogeochemistry research

SAMS has a strong history of working at the interface between chemistry, biology, physics and geology. Ongoing research investigates how marine biogeochemical cycles and associated ecosystems contribute to changes in ocean chemistry and global carbon export - in the distant past, now and into the future.

We also have experts in microbial hotspots and interspecies interactions e.g. between algae and bacteria and algae and their pathogens.

In the Arctic we investigate the implications of sea-ice and circulation changes on marine biology and biogeochemistry.
