SAMS is built on an amazing legacy of generosity, collaboration and a determination to achieve an ambitious goal for common good.
The first global marine research expedition was only made possible because of financial contributions from those who believed that curiosity, discovery and knowledge would help humanity progress.
In 1872 an intrepid team, including SAMS’ founder Sir John Murray, boarded HMS Challenger and began a three-and-a-half-year ocean voyage, not knowing what they might find. The impact of that epic journey changed our relationship with the planet’s oceans forever – marine science was born.
Our research informs and enables; providing the essential knowledge that creates solutions and action. Through the lens of marine science, we are tackling head-on some of the world’s most urgent and complex issues, such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, and providing sustainable resources for an ever-growing human population.
By funding SAMS your support can help today’s researchers and scientists do even more, even faster; unlocking the incredible power of the seas and enabling us to create a healthier ocean, for a healthier planet.
Whether looking to make a personal gift or provide funding from your trust, we can help you to meet your own philanthropic objectives by identifying where our projects and your goals align. Together, we can turn the tide on climate crisis, and find solutions for some of the world’s biggest environmental challenges
